The Hotel-Fazenda Baía das Pedras is located in the very heart of the Pantanal, in the so-called region of Nhecolândia that belongs to Aquidauana district and that is about 300 km far from Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. Its area is approximately 15.000 hectares. The hotel is called Baía das Pedras or Bay of Rocks because of the two fresh water lakes with rocks at the bottom that lie near it.
The main house was built in 1960. In July, 2003 it was renovated preserving its original style. There are 2 double and 3 triple-rooms, each one with a private bath, air conditioner and ceiling fan. A large dining-room, TV room, verandah and hammock lounge in front of the house - everything to make your stay pleasant and comfortable.
The Pantanal cuisine is also worth mentioning. Among the savoury dishes served at the Hotel are traditional rice de carreteiro, caribel, famous Pantanal barbecue, paçoca de pilão, locro and rabada.
The Pantanal horse- and cattle raising activities are also exercised on the farm. Existing over 300 years the Pantanal horse is one of the oldest breeds in Brazil. It appeared soon after the War between Brazil and Paraguay was over. Other horse breeds like Crioulo Argentino, Arabian and Lusitana horses greatly influenced the Pantanal horse´s development. Nevertheless, going through the natural selection process, it has acquired proper characteristics like a relatively small size, medium bearing, strong rear legs, hard hooves, high resistance and ability of grazing on wetlands, so-to-say it has got totally adjusted to the region´s climate.
There are many great treks our hotel offers the tourists, various short and extended tours which give one the freedom to explore the natural marvels of this scenic area. Horse-back riding along the Vazante do Castelo and the Cordilheiras, boat rides and canoeing by wooden canoes are undertaken either in the morning or in the evening, when one can easily spot wildlife and enjoy fascinating sunset scenery.
One gets in harmony with nature when trekking, contemplates breathtaking sunset and takes pictures of the all-surrounding beauties. Each time a spotlight tour attracts more and more nature admirers. It is the wildest-in-style trek our Hotel has to offer, during which a tourist is driven through the virgin woods at night in order to experience the thrill of the intriguing Pantanal´s nightlife. Photographic safari combines 2 occupations: photography and flora and fauna observation. A tourist is taken on a jeep ride to explore the abundant wildlife and reveal the dazzling array of the Pantanal´s attractions.
There is also a traditional tereré (cold beverage) hour on the farm. Spending a while enjoying tereré and chatting with the local cowboys give one a chance to learn more about their culture and their ways of life.
Birdwatching performed by both Brazilian and oversees tourists and scientists has turned to be one of the most exciting pastimes on Baía das Pedras. The first step was taken by us in the direction of the local birds’ fauna investigation. The results showed that Baia das Pedras has a good potential for Bird Watching. There are hundreds of birds species, many of them in the phase of disappearing from the Earth’s surface. Abundant food supplies and different types of natural environments, among which are open fields, ebb tides, bays and scrublands, help to perceive why there is such a great quantity of birds on the farm.
The Hotel-Fazenda Baía das Pedras can be accessed by air all the year round. The 1-engine plane leaves from Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, and the flight time is ca 50 minutes. During the dry season, that is from April to October, a transfer by a 4WD vehicle is also possible.
